Alveoloplasties

If you have lost one or several teeth or plan to receive dentures, your jaw and gum tissue need to be prepared for the procedure. After all, the surface of these structures is often left in jagged or irregular shapes that make it difficult to execute a dental restoration. At Dentalmed Associates, we lend our extensive experience and skill to alveoloplasties, as either part of a procedure, or a stand-alone treatment.

What is an Alveoloplasty?

The name sounds more complicated than what the procedure actually involves. In simple terms, this is a treatment used to reshape or smooth the jawbone and recontour the gum tissue, usually in preparation for a restorative treatment such as dental implants or dentures.

This procedure is necessary because the jawbone and surrounding tissues are usually left in rough condition after a tooth is removed. If the treatment area is not properly prepared for certain procedures, it makes implants or fitting dentures more difficult to place and treatment less effective.

How Does Alveoloplasty Work?

Despite being an oral surgery, this procedure is pretty straight forward. You will receive a combination of sedation and/or local anesthetic to numb the treatment area before we make an incision in the treatment area to expose the underlying bone. Then we use specialized equipment to adjust the bone to an optimal shape before sealing the gum tissue with stitches.

Does it Hurt and Do I Need it?

As with most oral surgeries, some discomfort is to be expected. However, we can use several anesthetic technologies, including sedation, to make the procedure itself painless. Once complete, you will undergo a healing process that can take several weeks during which you might have to adjust your diet and take medication to alleviate the residual pain and discomfort.

You might be a candidate for alveoloplasty if you require:

  • Dental implants

  • Dentures

  • Jaw reconstruction
